Let them know what's here. They'll see things made by people from throughout the world -- some from right here in Detroit. Some objects are thousands of years old, others are brand new. They're all here because someone thought they were so important, beautiful, or interesting, they should be shared with everyone. Sorry -- no touching the art. Instead, we invite everyone to exercise their eyes when walking through the galleries. Why? Lots of touching gradually changes the works of art, and our goal is to keep them looking the same for a long time. But kids LOVE to touch . . . So we do have one special work of art they can get their hands on: the donkey sculpture in the Farnsworth lobby. It's a great place to explain the "please don't touch" rule. What should we do when we're here? Talk! We love to hear people of all ages talking together about art. Some people think they have to whisper in the museum. Not true -- regular voices are fine. Let your pre-schooler lead you around the museum. There are a great variety of spaces to explore. Allow your child to discover Rivera Court, the floor tiles in the Great Hall, the Rainbow Tunnel, and the creaky stairs in Whitby Hall. Take them to our "greatest hits." Some of our most popular exhibits with kids age 5 through 8 are Mummies on the second floor, North wing and Armor in the Great Hall. Take the Celebrations and Ceremony self-guided tour. It features art made by people all over the world to celebrate special events and important ideas. Copies are available at the Information Desks. Are there other things to do? We regularly offer drop-in art-making workshops and other children's programs such as puppet shows and storytelling. Check at the Information Desks or at the museum entrances for information on each day's programs. Have we seen it all? Plan to come back. This is a big place, and there is much you won't be able to see in one visit. Think about making several brief visits with your young child.
